  • 1/2 cup basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup split yellow mung dal
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated
  • 1-2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 4-6 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander for garnish

Step 1

Rinse the rice and mung dal until the water runs clear.

Step 2

Heat ghee in a large pot. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds; let them crackle. 

Step 3

Briefly sauté turmeric, ground coriander, ginger, and garlic. 

Step 4

Stir in the rinsed rice and dal, coating them with the spices. 

Step 5

Pour in water, bring to a boil, then cover and simmer until tender (20-30 minutes). 

Step 6

Season with salt and garnish with fresh coriander.
