Ghee and Ayurvedic Medicine
In Ayurvedic medicine, Ghee goes way beyond being a delicious ingredient to enhance the flavour of your cooking without burning it has had numerous traditional applications, including the treatment of skin problems, respiratory diseases and allergies. Many Ayurvedic therapeutic preparations are made by cooking herbs into Ghee. Eating a small amount of Ghee butter or other fat or oil with your supplements can be a great way to maximise their efficacy.
Ghee is considered to be a yogavahi in Ayurvedic medicine a catalytic agent which carries the vitamins and minerals from herbs and spices into the seven dhatus or tissues of the body via our cells for better absorption.
How can Ghee and other fats help the absorption of supplements?
Getting the maximum benefit from your supplements requires effective digestion, absorption and delivery to specific systems and organs around the body. In particular, the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K is helped by the presence of fats.
Fat-soluble vitamins in our food are usually found combined with proteins such as meat and dairy products. When they enter the stomach, a combination of acid and enzymes release them from the protein they were originally bound to. The vitamins then mix with fats from our food and are churned around in the stomach to create small droplets of fat containing the vitamins, which are then easily absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream and transported to where they are needed in the body.
The process is similar when you take your supplements, but as they are not part of a food, the fats that aid absorption are not necessarily being eaten at the same time. Supplements of fat-soluble vitamins have been shown to be better absorbed by the body when taken with a meal containing fats.
So when you purchase your supplements, consider adding a jar of Ghee to your orders, its delicious for whipping up a quick omelette or stir fry, and if you take your supplements at the same time you'll be getting the benefit of better absorption!
