What is Amla Juice?

Also known as the ‘Indian Gooseberry’ or 'Amalaki', the Amla berry is sourced from the Amla Tree, native to Asia. Known for it’s small green berries that have a sour and bitter flavour, which in Ayurveda is referred to as an ‘astringent rasa’.

The Amla berry has been traditionally used in Ayurveda to promote good health. Whether the berries are included into the diet raw, juiced or cooked into meals, they provide nourishment whilst also promoting a healthy immune system and metabolism.

In Ayurvedic principles, Amla Juice is said to balance all dosha types of the body including Vata, Kapha and Pitta. It is known to aid in cleansing and pacifying all three doshas.

  • Vata = the sour and bitter taste balances the internal environment
  • Kapha = restores healthy environment due to the dry and astringent properties of this dosha type
  • Pitta = calming and restoring through the energetic rasa flavour

What are the main uses of Amla Juice?

The rich vitamin C content of the Amla Berry also provides the body with a natural, food based antioxidant, aiding in the protection against the harmful effects of free radicals and external stressors.

Thanks to the abundance of vitamin C found in the Amla Berry, Amla Juice is a fantastic way to optimise this intake in a natural, easy and accessible form.

2) Supports healthy digestion

Research shows the positive impact that Amla Juice can have on supporting a healthy digestive tract and alleviating the discomfort that can come with a compromised digestive system. This study found that those who included a serving of Amla into their diet daily saw a reduction in regurgitation and heartburn, whilst also preventing bowel movement urgency.

3) Promotes healthy, glowing skin

Vitamin C plays an integral role in maintaining skin health and promoting a healthy & glowing complexion. Are there are side effects of Amla Juice?

Amla Juice is simply a juiced product of the Amla Berry. This means that it provides a higher percentage of concentrated vitamin C. For this reason, consuming Amla in excessive quantities can lead to digestive upset including urgency, cramps and spasms. Similarly, excessive intake can also create dryness in the body, thus leading to dry skin, hair and nails whilst also drying out the digestive tract leading to constipation. For this reason, it is advised that you do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Which is better - Amla Juice, Amla Capsules or Amla Powder?

One of the easiest ways to see the benefits of Amla is to eat the fresh fruit - this should be cut and eaten raw. You can increase the bioavailability of the berry, whilst also reducing the astringent and sour taste by combining it with a dash of red chilli powder too!

However, the Amla Berry can be very difficult to find, especially one that is a good quality berry, for this reason, it can be most beneficial to include Amla Juice into your daily diet. Pure, cold-pressed Amla Juice can be stored in the fridge and easily included into your daily routine. The bitter and sour taste also supports your health by allowing your taste buds to send a signal to the brain about the nutrients it is receiving. Similarly, from an Ayurvedic perspective, it also allows the dosha type to be adapted and balanced. Combining Pure Amla Juice with Aloe Vera Juice for it’s digestive soothing properties or in warm water first thing in the morning is a wonderful way to introduce Amla Juice into the diet.

Amla Powder is made from the ground leaves of the Amla Berry, and is traditionally used in Ayurveda. For those who would prefer to avoid the bitter and astringent taste of the Amla Berry, capsulated formats may be preferred. Amalaki Capsules can also be opened and sprinkled on to food and meals, as well as being included into smoothies.
